A world of his own.
Many congratulations to the Sotheby’s team and Gareth Jones as “Queen Lyrics and Freddie Mercury’s Grand Piano Soar at Auction.”
The singer’s lifelong friend Mary Austin – who was selling the collection – said “There was nothing he loved more than an auction.” And this auction was quite some performance.
After a tour of highlights in New York, Los Angeles and Hong Kong, the entire collection was displayed in London for a month. More than 140,000 visitors attended the exhibition, with the line at times stretching almost a quarter-mile. This has been a global cultural event, creating awareness and engaging fans and collectors way beyond the ‘dusty old sales room’ traditional auction goers.
Sotheby’s has long been the world’s premier brand and destination for art, but with culturally significant sales like this, it has demonstrated how the brand is moving to become a portal to a much broader world of culture and luxury.
